Rotary encoder
Also known as quadrature encoder, quadratic encoder, absolute encoder, encoder. Category: Hardware
A rotary encoder is a sensor that measures the angular position of a shaft or plate. An incremental (quadrature) encoder counts pulses as the part turns, while an absolute encoder reports the position directly without a reference run.
How PhotoRobot uses it
On PhotoRobot glass-plate tables an encoder delivers roughly 40,000 pulses per rotation, evaluated 1000 times per second. This is what allows images to be captured at precise angles while the table keeps moving (Fast Spin). Absolute encoders determine the position of each machine axis without a calibration sensor.
